Compression only affects JPEG and WebP
The quality control has a real effect on JPEG and WebP, which use lossy compression. PNG uses lossless compression — the browser ignores the quality parameter in that case, so the result tends to stay much closer to the original size.
The output format
The tool keeps the same format as the uploaded file whenever it supports lossy compression; otherwise, it falls back to JPEG for the output. To explicitly pick a different target format, use the Image Converter.
